Cosmetic Surgery Success behind "Smile Pinki"
22nd February, 2009, Sunday night, was a read letter day in the annals of
India or to be more precise, Indian entertainment industry. 8 Oscars, the
ultimate accolade in artistic excellence, saw India well and truly arrived
on the world entertainment stage.
This day was special for plastic surgeons too. Best short documentary Oscar went to "Smile Pinki", made by American director Megan
Mylan,. tracing the story of a poor girl Pinki, born with a cleft lip whose life was transformed by plastic surgery. Pinki, born in an impoverished family in a
village Rampur, Uttar Pradesh, spent
the first few years of her life in abject misery and was shunned and
teased by the children in her village for her abnormal cleft lip.
Pinki is one of the thousands of children born with this birth defect yearly, who can not afford the plastic surgery because of poverty, ignorance or inaccessibility to doctors. She was operated by Dr Subodh Kumar Singh of Varanasi, who is supported by American NGO' The smile train", dedicated to free of cost treatment of cleft lip deformity.
Dr Subodh Kumar Singh has earlier achieved the distinction of performing maximum number of cleft lip surgeries in Asia, under the umbrella of The Smile Train. He is a excellent plastic surgeon with humanitarian approach and total dedication towards his patients. Dr Priti Shukla is proud of his achievements as a plastic surgeon and as a personal friend.
