BotoxTM
Botox injections are popular for removing wrinkles and for many other purposes. Botox is now the number one medical cosmetic procedure in the world.
What are the indications of Botox treatment?
» BotoxTM works for
Removing wrinkles: Fine lines on forehead and around the eyes are usually associated with aging. Some younger people in their twenties may also develop these due to excessive expressions or direct sun exposure. Botox can help removing these fine lines, for example:
• Vertical frown lines between eyebrows
• Horizontal forehead lines
• Crow’s feet at the outer corner of eyes
• Lines at the root of the nose (Bunny lines)
Defining Jaw line: In certain cases jaw line gets blurred with ageing. Botox injections into neck muscle( platysma) helps sharpen jawline.
Ageing neck: With age vertical bands in front of the neck appear on animation, when person is talking. Botox can help remove these bands.
Changing shape of the face: When angles of jaw are very prominent due to enlarged jaw muscle masseter the face appears square. Botox can be injected into jaw muscles to give more rounded or triangular shape to the face.
Smile correction (Gummy smile): Sometimes when a person smiles there is excessive show of teeth and gums. Additionally tip of the nose also may droop and deep smile lines may appear. If this condition may be due to overactive lip mucles and Botox injection can correct the smile.
Dimpled chin and protruding lower lip: Sometimes due to chin muscle overactivity multiple wrinkles and dimples are seen on the chin. Lowe lip may also protrude. Botox injections into chin muscle can solve this problem.
Elevating eyebrows: Elevated arched eyebrows can be achieved by botox injections into forehead and eye muscles.
Elevation of tip if the nose: If nose tip droops on smile , Botox injection into nasal muscles can be done to prevent drooping.
Facial nerve paralysis: Facial nerve paralysis due to birth defect, trauma or surgery can cause asymmetric smile. Strategic Botox injections can make the smile symmetrical.
Please note that individual assessment by Dr Priti Shukla is important to determine if your problem can be solved by Botox.
How does Botox work?
Certain wrinles on face form due to repeated expressions and muscle overactivity. Botox is a biological toxin which when injected into the particular muscle causing the wrinkles relaxes the muscle thus reducing the wrinkles. Whichever other problem is caused by enlargement or overactivity of muscle can be similarly treated with botox. In fact before botox was used for cosmetic indications it was being used since decades for relaxing tight muscles in children with cerebral palsy and with squint.
Are Botox injections painful?
Most people who routinely take Botox injections find it only mildly uncomfortable. Anaesthesia is not required . Injections are done with small needles and are very quick
How much time is required for Botox treatment?
Botox injections take 5-10 minutes depending on areas treated.
What is the downtime for Botox injections?
There is usually no downtime. You can go back to work after Botox. Mild redness or swelling occurs rarely. At times bruising can occur at injection site, which can be covered with makeup easily.
Is Botox safe?
Botox is FDA approved for its safety and it has been proved to be safe by experience over years.
How long does the effect of Botox last?
Botox effect lasts for 4-5 months usually. Then injection may be repeated as many times as needed to maintain the results.
How much does Botox cost?
Cost of the Botox depends on the quantity of the Botox used ( in units). That depends on the number of areas to be injected, the severity of the problem etc. Once that is determined after individual assessment cost can be estimated. For example horizontal forehead lines require 10-20 units and vertical frown lines 20-30 units.

Where: In the clinic
By whom: qualified and trained plastic surgeon/dermatologist
Anaesthesia: usually no anaesthesia is required . ice packs on the face temporarily dull the sensation, or local anaesthetic cream one hour before injection can be applied.
How is it done: Multiple injections into muscles involved through a small insulin needle .
How does it work: The fine wrinkles on forehead and around the eyes are expression lines. They form due to constant conscious or subconscious muscle contractions . Botox when injected directly into those muscles causes them to relax by temporarily paralyzing them locally and wrinkles disappear. The effect of botox takes upto 2 weeks to appear and it wears off in 3-5 months gradually. Then the muscles become active once again and botox can be repeated.
Recovery: No downtime. Patients can immediately resume normal activities
Safety: Long experience has proven BTX to be safe. To date, no systemic complications associated with BTX injections have been documented.
Side effects: Possible side effects include local numbness, swelling, bruising, or a burning sensation during injection. Some patients have reported temporary headache and nausea. Most complications are of short duration and can be avoided with proper injection techniques.

Q. At what age can the Botox injections be started?
A. Age is no bar for Botox . Fine wrinkles and expression lines develop even before some people turn thirty due to sun exposure and excessive squinting or expressing. Other than for wrikles Botox has been used by neurologists for younger cerebral palsy patients and for younger people with squints.
Q.Does Botox work on all kinds of wrinkles on face?
Ans: Botox only works on fine wrinkles caused by expressions that are due to muscle contraction like forehead frown likes, crowfeet and bunny lines on nose . When the same wrinkles are longstanding and have left permanent marks on skin or if there is additional loose fold of skin the result of Botox is partial . Botox does not work on some other wrinkles like wrinkles on cheeks, chin, around the mouth, under the lower eyelid. It also does not work on deep folds like nasolabial folds .
Q. How long does the effect of Botox last?
Ans:Usually 3-5 months. Duration depends on patient variation, injection technique and the number of units injected.
Q. Can Botox injection be repeated any number of times?
Ans: Present research evidence based on years of Botox usage throughout the world indicates that Botox can be injected safely repeatedly.
Q. Will my face look different or mask like after botox?
Ans: you will look relaxed and your kin will look more youthful.
Q. If I get Botox injections done will I not need surgical facelift?
Ans: Botox and surgical facelift address two entirely different sets of problems .Botox works on selected superficial expression lines .Surgical facelift on the other hand treats excessive sagging skin and muscles. Expression lines form earlier than sagging of face. Botox is started earlier and with advancing age facelift is done. Botox is frequently continued even after facelift.
Q. Can Botox remove my expression lines completely?
Ans: Early expression lines disappear without a trace. In late cases creases are permanently etched into the skin. In such a situation they can be softened by Botox and simultaneously or later a temporary filler can be injected to completely efface the wrinkle.
Q. Are there different types of Botox in the market?
Ans: Botox is the brand name of a USFDA approved company. Other brands of botulinum toxin are available- some made in China.
Q. Is Botox used for other purposes also?
Ans: Even before the usage of Botox started for facial wrinkles Botox was being used for correction of squints and tight muscles in cerebral palsy. Botox is also used for treating migraine headaches , excess sweating of palms, soles and axilla and for softening the angles of jaw.
